Non-Custodial Sovereignty
The Third Foundational Commitment of the Sondage Standard
Non-Custodial Sovereignty defines and governs possession of the finished record and the terms under which the Sovereign Archive or Sovereign Trove passes into the Senior Fellow's sole possession at the close of a Season. Neither Sondage nor its certified practitioners retain any copy, access, or residual claim to the record. The Fellow's ownership remains sovereign throughout the collection and archiving.
This position is guided by a tradition within archival science that places the rights and possession of a record with the person whose life it documents rather than with an institution. The CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance and the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials established that ethic at the point of transfer. Sondage adopts the ethic for different purposes and establishes the non-custodial position from the moment of production. The OAIS information packages and OCFL layout described as central to the practice of Embodied Provenance are essential to this sovereignty, because it relies on self-describing, software-independent packaging that is accessible to the Fellow or an heir without an account or subscription.
How Non-Custodial Sovereignty Operates
Sovereign Accession transfers the complete archive, the recordings, transcripts, Generative Information Package where one exists, and the Provenance Record itself, directly into the Fellow's encrypted vault on infrastructure the Fellow controls. Platform-neutral formats are central to this practice: lossless audio in open standards, transcripts in plain text and structured markup, metadata in established archival schemas.
Why Non-Custodial Sovereignty Is a Privacy Measure
Contemporary heritage products require proprietorial infrastructure with subscription continuation dependent on terms of service. Sondage removes itself from this architecture. No Sondage server holds the archive. No Sondage account mediates the Fellow's access. The Fellow alone decides who hears the record, and establishes the actual terms of communication with family, institutions, outside biographer, or archiving.
Why Non-Custodial Sovereignty Protects the Integrity of the Inquiry
Commericial apps build an ongoing stake in the the contents of historical inquiry, and profit from continued subscription or keeping the customer engaged for future product sales. Sondage is a standard of practice with distinct rituals of initiation and completion. The certified practitioner works under a standard rather than toward a storage or retail goal. This structural insulation bring integrity to the inquiry process, allowing the Scholar to press a question, hold a silence, and produce a primary source accountable to best practices in their discipline.
What Non-Custodial Sovereignty Produces
The completed Season ends with an structured archive, properly documented, securely in the Senior Fellow’s chosen value. Its content formats are designed for universal readability and access, not dependent on Sondage. The Sondage-Certified Primary Source is therefore designed to outlast Sondage.
The foundational commitments include Non-Custodial Sovereignty, Human Authorship and Embodied Provenance.
